IRS - the burden of taxation should return to corporations, where it was until the burden was shifted to We The People.

Army - maybe we don't need a standing army, but We The People should be well versed in our wielding of arms.

Education - a total clusterfuck. Right now, it's regurgitation. I'd appreciate some out-of-the-box learning, for starters.

Drug War - END IT NOW. All it has done was to line the pockets of scumbags with gold.

Airport Security - oh, sure...ask the Polish guy that was tased to DEATH...oh...that's right. You CAN'T.

Not yet, but I'll get my first attempt in today as the security group and rendered my Gentoo desktop useless (can't update for now).

I'm going to try and add Tinycore to my rescue usb as a boot option.

I'm very impressed too! I stumbled across TinyCore much like you did. I have a very old IBM 400Mhz PC and was anticipating getting a Puppy Linux install going on it (which I have done in the past). But not one to just go ahead and do it, I started to cruise the old Linux LiveCD streets to see what was going on in that scene these days.

I almost immediately went to DSL (having first checked out Puppy) and was surprised to discover no recent activity, so I began to dig a little deeper and unraveled the story of acrimonious splits and all the shenanigans surrounding the breakaway one the key DSL developer.

I'm writing this comment now in Firefox running on TinyCore, listening to streaming MP3s and I'm LOVING it! As you said, I love the idea of being able to make use of otherwise useless old hardware.

If I could cut stuff, this is what I'd like to do:

IRS - At least the income tax portion. Just *snip*

Homeland Security - FBI was doing just fine before. Maybe they needed to change their tactics or whatever. We didn't need a whole new department.

Army - The whole army (including reserves). We weren't supposed to have a standing army in the first place. I don't mind leaving in place the Air Force, Navy, and Marines (and coast guard).

Education - This needs to be ripped out and just start from scratch. I'd like to investigate an more "open source" style model. Maybe if government offered education, it would be in the form of free home schooling kits. That keeps parents involved in their kids lives and the "school" isn't a "free" baby-sitting service. If you don't like the free schooling, then competing private schools are an option.

Drug War - Prohibition didn't work, why would it work this time? I'd like to stop sending money to countries to fund their police and military.

Airport Security - In a free market, why is it acceptable that this is provided by the government? Why not let airlines handle their OWN security? Then the customer gets to CHOOSE the risk they would like to take. "I fly Air Safe. You get used to the cavity searches" or "I fly Freedom Air, I like flying with two pistols".

Not a 100% list, but a good start IMO.

Great post. It's so unfortunate that the leadership of our country has pushed us into a position where we are scorned by other nations and our men and women are forced to leave their families to go die or kill for corporate initiatives. The only thing that will protect your children from being pulled into the same type of thing when they are grown is to be active in electing and policing our leaders. In a world where corruption runs rampant, this is hard to do but lead by example. If their generation grows up watching their parents take an active interest/part in politics and world events and we teach our children to be compassionate, independent thinkers, the world might have a shot.

There's a great documentary you should watch...I know it was playing on HBO but I'm sure you can get it on Netflix or Amazon. It's called "American Drug War: The Last White Hope" and it was made by a man who was sick of watching loved ones die from "legal" drugs. So he started looking into drugs in the U.S. in general and it lays out how crack entered this country (through the CIA), the whole Iran Contra story, and most importantly how the "war on drugs" is really just a big joke that is making a whole lot of money for politicians and lobbyists.

Roots need the dark - I sure hope you see this soon. Your plants will die if you don't keep the roots in the dark!

A few layers of duct tape should be enough, but something more opaque would be best, like some spray-on black paint (make sure it's something that will stick to plastic.)

Slow growth like that could be caused by too little nutrients, or being root-bound, which doesn't seem likely.

What about shock? Anything that might be freaking them out?

Light? Too much or too little? Not growing longer would tend to mean a whole lot of light (which discourages the urge to grow tall/far to get more light), but I don't imagine that's the trouble either.

I should probably do another post about them. I took some pothos from a coworker and the most interesting this is that his "mother" plant has multi-color leaves, but mine are solid green.

I am going to keep one group in the "wick" pot, put another group into soil, and the third into a more classical "ebb and flow" kind of system. I think I'm just waiting on getting the timer to start that.

With the wick system I used, I have a strong plant, but it's just not growing like I would expect. It's sprouting new leaves, but it not... vining out.

I'll take some pics and do a good post on the progress. Thanks for reminding me.
